about

2020 - Deeply moving times we are witnessing. Biblical.
When we (back then: Amex, Rufftex, Tamas) hit up The Sect back in 2010 - in the middle of setting up Perkussiv - we were very pleased of the kind and professional response we got from Dave (and Ben via him). He had and still has the most important things: spirit, sincereness and modesty. As you all know, the first release on Perkussiv was by The Sect with 'Stranger' which substantially shaped the musical orientation Perkussiv tries to push: deep hearted music which comes from the soul.

This release is the first EP on Perkussiv by Dave's new alias 'Section 63'. He is still standing strong and doing what he loves most: technoid driven DnB. One of the rare true soldiers these times. Dave and me are cultivating both an honest, upfront musical relationship and a personal friendship for many years. I visited him several times in Berlin over the years and every visit was memorable. Last year, in 2019, he finally found his way to my lovely place (I call it the shire, because it is). We had some fun times and as usual good laughter (styrofoam is not as solid as expected).
At this weekend we also finally managed to team up for our first collaboration, which also found its way on this EP.

This release is showcasing a perfect balance between modern 2020-Techno-DnB and classic, organic drum-smashing deep DnB.
'Building Blocks' on the A-side is strongly unique. The prominent lead sound is taking the listener to a dreamful trip - not liquidly, but in a hypnotic and repetitive technoid way. At first you feel like the kick and snare are offset and not correct placed, but after a couple of bars - after the first drop - the listener gets the idea: you have been winded up. 'Building Blocks' is absorbing the listener in its very own hole, it feels like you are in a vacuum and genuinely slapped in the face.
The B-side is the collaboration of Section 63 and Amex. As the weekend was so remarkable for both Dave and Andreas, they just called the track 'Edenkoben'. Edenkoben is the nearest town of Amex' place. This collaboration contains the significant elements and trademarks of both artists. The very aggressive, mean and dystopian lead sounds are coming from Amex' Moog DFAM and are dominating the track's overall mood and direction. While sawing the listener with endgame lead sounds, the distinctive Section 63 drums and the heavy-pounding bass complete this masterpiece. Not to forget the brilliant arrangement, rapid switching paces and alternating lead sounds.
'On The Move' on the C-side brutally slaps the listener with astonishing UK-trademark drums: punching kick and snare, sparkled with typical high-end cymbals and hats. We do not need to mention that the heavy modulated bass and reeses are - as usual - a solid massage for the solar plexus. Seciton 63 even excels the dramaturgy after the first break by introducing an acid- and arpeggio-like leadline, ending in the climax of this wonderful track. The overall dystopian, menacing mood and tonality very much reminds of the former, typical trademarks by 'The Sect'.
The last track on the D-side, 'Memory Error', is connecting flawlessly to 'On the Move'. It is kind of a hybrid or bridge of Section 63's original roots and his evolution to the 2020 sound. As always 'Memory Error' is focussing on the dancefloor and wants the listener to dance and move his arse. Again, the overall energy of this track is threateningly and mean. Counter-playing percussions and glass-like lead sounds, driven by fast and heavy drums.

This EP by Section 63 could be seen as a contemporary documentation of his very own evolution and development. This release tells way more than just music. It is showing the talent and love of an outstanding artist, sticking to his principles of being real and unbiased by the hype.

Thank you Dave for everything. Thank you, that you are so modest and humble. Thank you, that you were part of Perkussiv since the very beginning and that you still are.
